Portland, Oregon's Best Breweries

Portland isn't known as "Beervana" for nothing. Brewers in Portland have been producing some of the best craft beers in the country since the mid-1980s. Today, Portland is the epicenter of craft brewing in the United States, with around 70 breweries in business at any given time. In this article, we discuss some of Portland's best known and most popular craft breweries.

Breakside Brewery has more than one location, but the Dekum pub, walking distance from Piedmont Vacation Rental, is the most Portland-like location. Besides beers, the Dekum location also serves excellent meals, including soups, sandwiches, burgers, salads, and more.

Cascade Brewing

Cascade Brewing is considered by many to be Portland's leader in sour brewing. They were creating sours over 20 years ago, well before they became trendy brews. Today, Cascade Brewing is considered the premier brewery for barrel-aged Northwest sour ales.

The Barrel House, located on Belmont Street, is a former 7,000 square-foot warehouse. Nicknamed the "House of Sour," the Barrel House has a 2,100 square-foot tasting room. Besides drinks, you can also enjoy sandwiches and small plates on the site's street-front patio.

Little Beast Brewing

Little Beast Brewing is a relative newcomer to the Portland craft brewing scene, having opened its doors in 2018. However, the owners--Charles Porter and Brenda Crow--are well-known in Portland. Charles has over two decades of brewing experience. He uses mixed-culture-fermentation to produce truly unique beers. He also produces mainstream IPAs and lagers.

Little Beast Brewing is located in an unassuming 1912 Craftsman-style house on Division Street. Besides drinks, you can also enjoy snacks and sandwiches at Little Beast Brewing.

Upright Brewing

  • Address: 240 N Broadway, Portland, OR
  • Distance from us: 2.6 miles
  • Hours: Daily, 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. (Saturday-Sunday, open at 11:00 a.m.)

Upright Brewing was one of the first Portland breweries to specialize in farmhouse ales. Inspired by French and Belgian farmhouse-style ales, they've added a distinctive Pacific Northwest character to their small-batch, hand-crafted products. The result is a variety of traditional ales and lagers, as well as unique fruity beers and sour beers.

The building housing Upright Brewing can be a bit hard to find. The brewery is in the basement of the Leftbank Building, while the taproom and cafe is on the building's first floor. You can sit and relax in either area, have a beer, and listen to eclectic musical selections. Note that Upright Brewing doesn't serve meals.
